Ebenezer Moses LACEY
« on: Sunday 19 April 09 14:07 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone
I am looking for any information regarding the life of
my great uncle, Ebenezer Moses LACEY. He moved to South Africa in the
early 1900s with his wife, Gertrude Annie ELLIS, my great aunt and their
daughter. It would seem from the passenger lists that she came back to
England several times without him. Gertrude died in 1944 and Ebenezer
re-married in 1949 to Ingeborge Christine LAUGHLIN  formerly TEXERAAS
The only known address for them is
25 Goodman Terrace
Fairwood VIA Orange Grove
Johannesburg
South Africa
Ebenezer was a printer by trade.
Also could anyone tell me what information is given on South African
Birth Marriage and Death certificates.

Regards Paul

Hi Paul,

The following NAAIRS file makes reference to Ebenezer's death :

NAB MSCE Ref 2515/1949

LACEY, Ebenezer Moses (surviving spouse) LACEY, Ingeborge Christine, formerly LAUGHLIN, born TAXERAAS.

The file is housed in the Natal archives in Pietermaritzburg and should contain his death notice and maybe other interesting documents.  There is a reference as to how you could go about getting the images of the file contents in the topics at the top of the forum.

best wishes
Leanne

Sorry Paul, I missed this part of your posting.

Marriage certificates generally didn't contain too much information, but the death notice (probably contained in the file i referenced in the first post) usually contained the following fields for information:

Name, place of birth, parent's names, residence, occupation, place where died, spouses name, date and place of last marriage (not always), childern's names and whether majors or minors at time of death, whether property or a will was left.
If a will was left, that might also be available in the file, and if you get lucky you might also find a copy of a marriage certificate and maybe even a copy of his first wife's death notice.  If not, I see there is also a reference on Naairs to her estate file/death notice.

best wishes

Hi Leanne,
Thanks for that. I've sent for his wife's papers (first wife, my great aunt) but not arrived as yet. I shall order Ebenezer's today. His could perhaps be more informative.
