Castle Eden / Hedghop / e
« on: Sunday 19 April 09 19:06 BST (UK) »
I have been looking at Bapt. Records Castle Eden Co. Durham.

For 7/12/1735  John  s  Richard Humbell, Hedghop, farmer.

This place is mentioned several times throughout the  BMD records.

The only place I can find with that name is in Northumberland.

It would appear to be quite a way away from Castle Eden, or is there an area closer to home that I'm missing ?

Any help or thoughts please.

Mazeppa

Perhaps this is Headshope farm, about 1and1/2 mile West of Castle Eden village.

Hi

I agree with Peter.

I have just had a look on the Durham County Council map viewer. A very handy site to find places in County Durham, has maps from 1856 onwards. However I did search for Castle Eden as Heads Hope wasn't coming up in the search but panning around it is certainly there as Peter described.

Was it a farm then Peter or is it one now?

Castle Eden is in County Durham,it  is adjoined to  Hesledon and Wingate. It is approx 3 miles south of  Peterlee and 3 miles west of Blackhall. If you have map book you can find it just off the A19.  Villages nearby also include Hutton Henry and Wheatley Hill. It is a farming area and prior to the year 2000 it employed a great may staff at its brewery ' Whitbread' ( now demolished)

Haven't been that way for many decades. It was a farm with cottages for workers but occupied by railwaymen. The area has changed drastically since the A19 was driven past and the complex of colliery rail lines were scrapped and their tracks turned into public bridleways. Headshope still exists as a postal address but I'm not sure that the old buildings still exist.

There is a place called Heads Hope on the current OS map.

Go to the link Evie gave http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm
and search on postcode TS27 4ST, which will give you the location. You can look at the old maps by using the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page, and zoom out using the '-' button.

Thank you all for your help, that farm would appear to be the right place.

Cheers, Mazeppa
