George CHILMAN Bourke, New South Wales
« on: Sunday 19 April 09 21:57 BST (UK) »
My Gt grandmother's brother, George Chilman, disappeared without trace from London, England sometime after the 1881 census. He had got into some really bad trouble, so the family have always thought that he must have been murdered. Several of us have been chasing this on the internet for some time now. I asked for help on Rootschat and had a response about the New South Wales death register for 1922, Bourke District, which has a George Chilman aged 66 - about the right age. I would be so grateful if anyone with access to Australian censuses can find any trace of this George which would support or rule out this tantalising lead.

Hello  there

Now  Australia  does not  have census  records  that are able  to be  viewed, except for some very early ones.

here is the link to  the  previous thread on  the subject
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,269418.msg1537266.html#msg1537266

You  could obtain a copy of  the death certificate from the NSW on line Bdm's for around $27.00 aus
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/searchHistoricalRecords.htm

or you could use a transcription agent for around $17.00 aus.

However as  they are no  parents listed it may  not  be  that helpfull, unless whoever  gave details knew where and when  he was born.

Hi,
A search here will show a man by that name as crew on a ship to, Sydney, NSW Australia from San Francisco.

Age is 2 or 3 years out.

May be worth a look

Thanks very for that. It looks like it probably isn't our George, but I will follow uo on your suggestions.

Not  sure  that  you  could assume  he was not your George,  the George  who was a crewmember coming into Australia from Sanfranciso could have very well returned  there.

kind thoughts JEnn

Hi Laura

George CHILMAN died 4 Sep 1922 aged 66 and is buried in an unmarked grave ie no headstone, in the old Church of England section of the Bourke Cemetery.  However this doesn't help you identify him as your George.  Hopefully a transcription of his death reg may note place of birth.

Cheers
Cando

You are right, I can't assume it isn't him. I should have said that at the moment, it gets me no nearer, although of course it might do if I can find a departure from England which doesn't rule him out. Does anyone know if it would have been easy/possible to travel under a false name, or whether convincing ID would have been required? If I know that he probably had to travel under his own name, that makes it a bit more hopeful. As he was "running away" if he was still alive he might well have wanted to leave no trace in England. Whether this leads anywhere or not, this is all very interesting.

Thanks for looking,

laura
