Innes and Grant families
« on: Sunday 19 April 09 22:27 BST (UK) »
I recently found that I have Scottish ancestors from the Banff region.  My great grandmother was Georgina Forbes Grant born in London 1861.  Her father was George Grant born in Banff 1832 and her mother Penuel Innes born in Mortlach 1835.  George and Penuel were married in 1860 at  Eastertown, Glenlivet.  Penuel's parents as recorded on the statutory marriage certificate were Alexander Innes and Margaret Innes nee Taylor.  George's parents are listed as Robert Grant and Elizabeth Grant nee Forbes.  Both fathers are listed as merchants.

I am trying to find the grandparents of George and Penuel , they would be my great x4 grandparents.  Any information on these families would be great.

Hope someone can help it would be much appreciated

Thanks

Hi Maraussan

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Given the dates, have you tried searching for death certificates on Scotlands People for George and Penuel's parents? If they died post 1855, their death certificates would include details on their parents' names, including mothers' maiden names.

There is a submitted tree on Ancestry which shows Penuel's father (she shows as Penniel) as Alexander Innes, born in 1809 in Inveraron. His parents as William and Penniel Innes.

There are a number of christening entries showing on www.familysearch.org in Inveravon, Banff to parents William Innes and Penuel (no maiden name showing):

1. JOHN INNES 13 FEB 1800
2. JOHN INNES 16 FEB 1800
3. WILLIAM INNES 26 JAN 1808
4. ALEXANDER INNES 16 NOV 1809
5. ISOBEL INNES 19 JAN 1812

Not sure why two entries show for John a few days apart. All actual extract from the Old Parish Registers

The following seem to be related to this line:

A little bit of the Robert Grant/Elizabeth Forbes line:

Hello Monica,

Thanks for the info which I've got round to reading but I am now very confused.  I got the death certificate for Alexander Innes, died 1876 at Dufftown parish of Morlach, widower of Margaret Taylor and was expecting to find that his parents were William and Penuel Innes.  However the certificate states that parents were Alexander Innes and Penuel Innes nee Fleming.  Have I got this wrong as everything else ties in with other info I have.  Can you resolve the mystery?  Could the entry be incorrect?

Thanks
Pat

Hi Pat

Not sure what to advice you  :-\ Not much more showing on the general records.

Might be worthwhile you trying to contact the people following the same line who have stumbled on the same problem of Alexander's death cert info, from the link I gave earlier:

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/MORAY/2006-05/1148309659

And the other person researching the same line:

http://searches2.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/INNES/2007-09/1189517488

Hopefully they made have some headway since 2006 - fingers crossed!

You  might want to look through the censuses to see if anything helps. For example, the 1841 census for potential parents to Alexander:

William Innes 55, farmer
Pennel Innes 55
John J Innes 35
William Innes 30
Pennel Innes 5
Alexander Innes 1
Margaret Duncan 25
Ann Watson 10

Address: Easter Corries, Inveravon

Have you managed to find Alexander and family in 1841? I wondered whether the Pennnel above could be Alexander and Margaret's daughter, can't see another entry for her.

Yes,the information on the death certificate may be incorrect.Who was the informant? It's not uncommon for the parents christian names to be wrong!
