Grace Darling MAJORBANK & Thomas Burn SAMSON
« on: Tuesday 21 April 09 02:38 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

All I know if these two is that she was born in Newburn, Northumberland, England on abt 1797, and he was born there too on 03 Nov 1793.

They married and had a daughter called Jane SAMSON who was born in Embleton, on 11 Jan 1820.  So I;m picking they got married before then.

I have no death dates for them and would love to find out where they are buried.  Their daughter Jane must have been an adventurous soul as she came to live in New Zealand in the 1860s!

Any help to flesh out her parents would be wonderful!

Hi Kiwi Girl

You can search the Newburn and Embleton Bishops' Transcripts free on http://www.rootschat.com/links/064d/

Indexed by parish, then you have to trawl through, hope you find them all

Jane's baptism is on page 214 of the Embleton records  :)

Kind regards
Barbara

Hi Kiwigirl,

Do you have any records of this cople - baptism etc???

Or have you taken the dates from Familysearch???

The problem is -ancestral file shows
Thomas Burn Samson b newburn - married to Grace Darling majorbank - daughter jane b Embleton
As you are possibly aware this information is member submitted and so must be treated with caution

then there is - member submitted again- Thomas Burn Samson
christened 3 nov 1793 newburn
buried 23 Feb 1851 Berwick on Tweed
spouse Grace Cuthbertson marriage c 1816

then there is IGI EXTRACTED record
Thomas burn Sampson
christened 3 nov 1793 Newburn Northumberland
Parents
John Sampson
Eleanor
(note the "P")

also the christening date is not usually the date of birth - somtimes christenings took place within a few days/weeks/months of birth - sometimes they occurred much later

maybe the death reg of grace in N on T1856 is the correct grace (unless it is daughter grace)
as 2 of her daughters (octavia and Eleanor) were living in N on T reg dist in 1851

1851
1 Warwick Place
jesmond Northumberland (reg dist newcastle on Tyne
William marshall head m 35 Tea dealer & Grocer Berwick on Tweed
Eleanor wife 28 Norfolk City
Octavia Samson sister in law U 22 Governess Norfolk city
William M Hill nephew 12 scholar N on T
Mary Watson servant 18 House servant Northumberland
HO107 2408 351 39

Added: Just noticed in another post that grace (mother) was in Scotland in 1861- so maybe the 1856 death is her daughter

Suz, was there an occupation given for Thomas Burns Samson in the census?

The reason I ask is that I can't quite make it out on the BT for Jane's baptism

5th March 1820 Jane daughter of Thomas Burns and Grace SAMSON abode Embleton, occupation looks like Riding Officer of the Customs

I didn't trawl any further back in the BTs as I thought Kiwi Girl might like to do that for herself!

There is a member submission on the IGI giving a baptism for an Eleanor Samson at Stiffkey, Norfolk (very close to Wells next the Sea) on 16th June 1822, parents Thomas Burn Samson and Grace Cuthbertson.

It also gives Eleanor's marriage to William Christie Marshall at Berwick on Tweed in 1847, which would tie with Grace being there in 1851 census
