Ships to Australia
« on: Tuesday 21 April 09 12:16 BST (UK) »
At the archives yesterday I found 2 records for journeys to Australia.I would like to find out more about thes e ships and wondered I go about it.
One journey was on the "Suffolk" bout of Liverpool (Houlder Line) on 10th June 1911 and the otherwas  in 1907 on the "Ayreshire" out of London.
It would be super to get pictures of these shps.
Thanks

Found a Suffolk, but not the Ayreshire. There is one Ayreshire, but it sank prior to 1907.

One ship called the "Ayrshire" constructed in 1903.  It is the last entry on the following site

http://www.reach.net/~sc001198/ShipsA2.htm

Ayrshire is a much more likely spelling as it would have been named after the Scottish county.

The difficulty when searching for ships is that as one of a certain name disappeared another popped up. Also, ships were regularly changing owners and having name changes.

Troop Transports

Troop transports were requisitioned by the Commonwealth government for the purpose of transporting the AIF overseas but in addition to carrying troops, horses and military stores they also carried wool, metals, meat, flour and other foodstuffs, mainly for Britain and France. The fleet consisted mainly of British steamers and a few captured enemy ships.

There is also a Suffolk on this page.
