ELLIS family to Australia
« on: Tuesday 21 April 09 20:30 BST (UK) »
Can anyone look up a possible immigration for Walter Ellis. In 1890 he married an Annie Clark who may be my great aunt. I know she went out to Australia sometime ---probably between 1890 and 1910.Annie was born in 1869 .
Thank you
Ringrose

 Hello Ringose,

I have looked at the records for Victoria and found some, as you don't give an age it is quite difficult to know where to begon. There are numerous W. Ellis entires three for Walter Ellis but all per 1890.

Several Mrs W Ellis entries and som for Annie Ellis and Mrs Annie Ellis. But I need a possible age fro Walter to narrow down the parameters of the search.

Some more information about where they were born died and which state you think that they were married in may also help with more detailed searching.

good luck

Robyn

Hi

Have you located them on the 1901 Census?  This would narrow the time frame for their emigration.

There is an online shipping record for an Annie ELLIS, no date of birth, departing Liverpool in 1909 for Melbourne.

There are so many Mr and Mrs ELLIS on the shipping records. You will need to trawl through to identify them by their ages.

Nice work Cando,

It makes you wonder why they moved from Victoria to NSW?

Good morning to all
I ahve been searching for ages for a possible passage for an Annie Clark b 1869 in Sussex. I know she married someone called Ellis . Some of the family say she was married in Perth but you kind folk have already searched down that avenue. I then
thought that she may have married on board or before she went. I found a marriage in 1890 inKent to a Walter Ellis so I wondered if that could have been her. There is no record of her on the 1891 or 1901 either by the name Clark or Ellis which is what I think they went immediately--maybe.
Later the family  lived in Western Australia  (Bindi Bindi) but they could have landed anywhere in Australia. Interestingly by 1914 two of her step brothers were also in Western Aostralia and joined the Australian army--both going to Western Front (only one returned to Port Hedland)
Walter was probably aroind the same age .
I dont want any one spending too  much time on this as I have no proof that the marriage above is her .
Many thanks

Hi,

I had a look at the burials in Karrakatta, (I was reviewing my own family buried there) and there are a few Annie Ellis burials one looked quite promising:

ELLIS     ANNIE     67 years     1935     VICTORIA PARK  est dob 1868
ELLIS     ALBERT THOMAS     86 years     1960     LEEDERVILLE  est dob 1872

This couple are buried in the one plot.

matching death rego for Annie

ELLIS     ANNIE     Female  PERTH     #1959      year 1935

I note you have been given the burial for Annie in earlier threads.

In Victoria in 1897 an  Albert Thomas Ellis married Annie Clark rego 4614 I had discounted this as the brides birth place was listed as Ballarat.

But after reading about WA births to an Albert Ellis and Annie Clark  in an earlier post

"Hi Ringrose
Found two births to Albert ELLIS and Annie CLARK
James ELLIS b. 1900  Registration District: Denmark, WA  Reg No 4441
Phillip Albert ELLIS b. 1904  Registration district: Albany WA  Reg No 5812.
Cheers Cando"

and finding  this couple buried in the same plot it is another lead. The birth place may have been transcribed incorrectly.

I think the time has come to purchase certificates or organise some transcriptions of these records. Annie Ellis's death would be the best way to start.

regards

Robyn

Robyn have you read all the linked threads thoroughly?

Annies 2nd name was Elizabeth. She was born in Sussex in 1869. Family members tell me she married in Perth to this Mr Ellis.I cannot find any record of her voyage. She obviously settled there as I can remember card sfrom the family arriving in the 40s and 50s from Bindi Bindi, Sorry I know so little

ELLIS     ANNIE     67 years     1935     VICTORIA PARK  est dob 1868 Regross

If you check the Vic indexes you will see there are four Ann CLARK's born in the Ballarat area in 1868.

We have searched for a Charles and now a Walter as  Annie's husband.

Certificates in WA are very expensive ....about $42 I think.

Perhaps some leads in other threads need to be followed up.

Hi Cando,

Yes I had read the threads, but from years of tracing my own missing family members all born and married in Victoria to eventually find them buried in Karakatta WA I did some research to try and discover why so many cousins from different families headed off to WA between 1895 and 1900. (5 branches 20 people)

There was a gold rush in Kalgoorlie and land was being released on the Serpentine and Victoria was in a depresssion. Australians were leaving for Paraquay to escape the depression. It seems my family went to WA to find security( farming and not goldmining).

It is reasonable to suppose that Albert Thomas and Annie Clark, indexed in the Vic records made the same journey. Family overseas may not have been fully informed of what was happening in those years. I can find no trace of them in Victoria and no children born to them.

( the family members of my Victorian  ancestors only recalled one female going to WA.)

At this stage is worth purchasing at least the Annie Ellis death certificate or obtaining a transcription to perhaps rule out this couple particularly as there is no marriage obvious in WA.

Even looking for Annie ELizabeth or Elizabeth Clark marriages takes the search no further forward.

nice mystery to keep looking at

regards

Robyn
