Joseph Henry HUMPHRIES - Victoria
« on: Tuesday 21 April 09 20:44 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I recently found the  Army Service Record of my great uncle Joseph Henry Humphries. He was born in Warrington, Lancashire  in 1893 & I was told  that he never got in touch with his family again after he emmigrated to Australia.

From his service record he was living at 119 Bay Street, Port Melbourne when he enlisted in 1915 & that he was married to Dagmar in the same year. His occupation was  a stevedore - so it's hard to understand why he joined the army.

In 1916 Joseph was reported missing, there was a letter to the Military asking for information from a Jane Christoffersen saying that his wife Dagmar was delicate & the suspense was killing her. It was later confirmed that Joseph was killed in action on the 19th of July 1916 at the Battle of Fromelles in France along with over 5 thousand other Australian soldiers.

After a lot of searching I found a marriage index for Joseph Humphries to Dagmar Christoffersen in 1915 (the name on the letter gave me the clue!) Dagmar remarried in 1922 & her surname was Jack. I believe his given name was Alan.

There is a receipt for Joseph's medals in 1983!!!signed for by D Jack - if this is his wife, she would have been 91 at the time.

I would love to hear from anyone that has a connection to these names or any help & advise on how to find further information.

Thank you

I can see on the indexes his marriage to Dagmar Sigrid in 1915 and her re-marriage to Alan Francis JACK in 1922.

Australian Electoral Rolls 1900-1936 [not all years]
1919 Victoria
HUMPHRIES Dagmar Sigrid M, 419 Bay Street, Port Melbourne   Home duties.

1930 New South Wales
JACK Alan Francis  Lexington Court Road, Edgecliffe  Civil servant
JACK Dagmar Sigrid Lexington Court Road, Edgecliffe Home duties

1936 New South Wales
JACK Alan Francis  75 Fitzwilliam Road, Vaucluse  Accountant
JACK Dagmar Sigrid  75 Fitzwilliam Road, Vaucluse  Home duties

Death
JACK Alan Francis
Father John Francis  Mother Annie  GLEESON
At Heidelberg  81 years  1979  Reg#25783

http://www.fcmp.com.au/
Fawkner Memorial Park wishes to advise that the location of the cremated  remains of the late Alan Francis JACK aged 81 were scattered.

There is no cremation/burial record at Fawkner for Dagmar.

Deaths registrations in Victoria only extend to 1985.  A strong possibility that Dagmar is the D JACK.  Alan Francis's death certificate would detail any children of the marriage. You can purchase online [AUD $17.50] and download immediately.

After reading  the war records  I  would  just like to say  that I  think you  might be incorrect in  saying 1983,  to me it looks like 1922 or 1923.  If  you compare  the  8  in  the month  with  the "8" in  the year  they  don't seem  to match.  Also  the Signature is D. JAck  which  she still was in 1922.

Kind  thoughts Jenn

I agree with Jenn....there is supporting correspondence in 1923 indicating the desire to give Mrs Jack her late husband's Victory Medal....and mentioning next time she collects her pension.  The placement in the file would also indicate 1923.

However I am unable to find a death registration for Dagmar in Victoria to 1985 or NSW to 1978.

Searched all the online cemeteries I could find around the suburb of Heidelberg where Alan F died.

http://www.elthamcemetery.com/ec-search.asp

Date of Interment  29 Sep 1993
JACK  Sigrid M    94 years   ID1183

Would have been rather young to have married in 1915.

Hi KateHayes :)

The WW1 service record is online at
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch.aspx.

I was actually responding to your post regarding the search for a second marriage, but you have modified it ;)
