Oh wow... thanks Leanne...

Did you look at the picture? what an eerie place!

Also just a question out of curiosity, was she entitled to his pension if she had remarried?

Sorry i altered it as i read further into it and was also googling information...

His death coincides with the battle of Fromelle. I would definately get family to apply as they found a mass grave and trying to identify these 400 soldiers.
His battalion was there and it was July that he went missing. Exact dates of battle of fromelle.
His date of missing is 19th July 1916, date of biggest battle at Fromelle... how exciting if you're able to get his body buried and identified after all these years!

Hi KateHayes :)

Understand but a tad difficult to respond to your question re - had I looked for a 2nd marriage. By the time I posted my response the question had disappeared. ;D

Pollie123 has read the service file, so I have concentrated my efforts on Dagmar etc.

Wires crossed here I think :-\

Cheers
Cando

Hello  there Katie,

I  would  advise you  to  remove  the   copy of  the letter from  the war files you have posted as I  feel  you are no doubt breaching rootschat protocol,  anyone who is interested can click on  the file and read it for themselves.

It  is very frustrating when  people amend  their  postings  with  out actually saying  "amened to add it  etc"  because someone else may  look up  and  post  the relevant topic and  then  it appears as if  they haven't read the thread  properly.

I am not meaning to criticize just pointing out  what can happen,

kind  thoughts Jenn

There are three death and one funeral notices for Dagmar Sigrid (Gwen) JACK, Melbourne Herald-Sun Monday September 27 1993.  At Greensborough Private Nursing Home, loved wife of  Alan (dec), mention of sister and sister-in-law of Ted and Mary (dec) and Louise and Victor (both deceased), some nieces and nephews.  Funeral was to Eltham cemetery

So sad - no mention of Joseph from all those years ago.......

Judith

Thank you so much - I really appreciate it

Joseph had a really hard life he was caught stealing fruit in a local market & was sent to a training ship for boys in the Menai Straits for 4 years -  he was only 12 at the time.

The Military were trying to send his medals to Dagmar, his wife from 1923, she claimed them in 1983 possibly after the death of her 2nd husband. According to his service record, his father's name & address were crossed out & replaced by his wife's & his family were not aware of his death.

Dagmar Christoffersen was born in Australia but  from her name I assume that she's from Scandinavian descent.

Can I ask you where you found the information on Dagmar's death?

Kind regards & happy hunting!

BTW - if I can help you with your research in England please let me know

It was in a Melbourne daily paper, The Herald-Sun.  I often go to the Australian National Library where there are almost all of the major Australian newspaper on fiche.  :D

As for you helping me - if you could just find my 3g grandfather born 'in Somerset' (according to family records) in 1768ish......................  He is my big brick wall but I live in hopes LOL

Poor Joseph, how sad!

Seriously - I am delighted to have been able to help.
