What did he buy? Completed - Thanks
« on: Wednesday 22 April 09 14:38 BST (UK) »
We are talking about the Bridgnorth Horse Fair of 1650. I'm struggling with line 3 and the word after the price on line 4.

I have:
Edward Beard of Buildwas in the Coun(ty) Salop yeom(an) sold unto George Rowley of Watling Street Coun(ty)  Salop yeom(an) 1  ?   7 years old reins? 5L 1s vouchecs? Thomas Syner of Broseley Coun(ty) Salop Collyer, Slvanus Morgan of Leighton Coun(ty) Salop yeom(an).
Syner alias Taylor from Broseley and Benthall

Beginnig of line 4, before the amount, could say 'payment' or an abbreviation of such.

Middle of line 3 'receipt'?

I think line 3 is a physical description of the animal. I have seen some that say things like bay mare with a black tail and a mark on its face - that sort of thing.

Could the fourth word in line four possibly be 'yearling'?

I think word 4 in line four could well be 'vouchers' - either in the sense of people witnessing the deal, or perhaps vouching for the purchaser's ability to pay

See definition 6 here http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/voucher

Could line 3 say

j dun pareing ricept on the neere cave...

meaning

1 dun [colour brown], paring [damage?] received on the near [part of a horse?]...

and the first word of line 4, before the price, actually be the word "price"?

I agree with JenB that it is vouchers, referring to what would nowadays probably be called guarantors.

We need an equestrian expert to tell us if part of a horse can be referred to as a cave :-\
