photograph for dating
« on: Thursday 23 April 09 00:01 BST (UK) »
I would like an approximate date for this photo. It is a Sunbeam Post Card, and the address on the back states Sunbeam Photo Ltd 82 Swevn road Margate. The photo was in a brown cover (althoughI cannot guarantee that it belongs to the photo) on the brown cover are the words Albert Hester Upper Clapton Road E.5.

Apparently the Sunbeam postcard company was Britain's biggest seaside photography company, begun in about 1919, and at its height (probably in the 1950s and 60s) employed about 300 people, collecting negatives from its photographers every hour for developing and printing!

The address was Sweyn Road, and I don't think Albert Hester has anything to do with them...couldn't find anything.

I think I would go along with Iria's guesstimate of 1920s :)

Cheers,
China

many thanks for your opinions, what puzzles me is the childs outfit. I did'nt think the material used in his vest and playsuit was produced in the 1920's, I was born in the forties and our outfits were made of cotton or wool.

I'd put it later - maybe late 30s or 1940s. I have photos of my Gran in a hat similar to  that in the 1940s.

Also, I think his outfit maybe a bit 'modern' for 1920s.

The hat on the right, though, Gadget...bit cloche-like for 1940s?

Not enough detail to tell about that hat, China, but don't think his little outfit is right for 1920s - it even has a 1950s feel about it in some ways.

Added - come up with a similar little outfit from the 1920s and I'll go with that  :)
