« on: Thursday 23 April 09 19:25 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have access to the 1901 Co Carlow census and could do a look up for me please?
Trying to trace Thomas Brennan and son Thomas Brennan then aged approx 15/16 or so.
I have no other infomation another than the possibility of the place name Clonegal.
Thomas Brennan senior died 1909 and is buried in Clonegal said to be the place of his birth.
Extremely greatful for any help direction.
Regards Jackie.

A list of burials for Clonegal cemetery only has one Thomas Brennan recorded and while the records say that no all headstones may be recorded, it's very extensive.
Brennan Thomas, 85, Monaughrin, 25/5/1922

There are also records for other Brennan's named,
Mary, Elizabeth, John, Margaret, Bridget, Winifred, Bridget, James, James.

Many thanks for your reply,

At this early stage I really don't have no idea at all if the gravestone of the Thomas Brennan or any of the other Brennan's you mention are connected to my Thomas Brennan.

All I have so far is that the Thomas Brennan I received details of yesterday died 1909 and is buried in Clonegal. As the family appear to have been Roman Catholic, I'm presumming Thomas senior would also have been R.C.

I will most definately keep the information you sent as it may come in useful at a later date.

Once again thank you for taking the time to reply.

Regards Jackie

hi there
i have just taken a look at the baptismal parish records for clonegal, and can find no thomas brennan, there are two brennan familys baptising there children around 1885/6, they are from springfield and ballyredmond. It may have been the case that he was not baptised, or maybe not entered in the register. Also this is a transcription of the register that i am reading, and maybe when it was being transcribed the reader maybe could not decipher it.

The 1911 census shows a 14 year old thomas brennan living in ballyredmond. living with his mother and two siblings(possibly) as a servant of the redmond family.

I hope this is of some help to you.

all the best

Hi Noxas
You are right, but the Thomas Brennan that Jackie is looking for would have been born around 1885, so this could be his dad or an uncle or the like?
I will be down there sometime and will have a look in Clonegal and Kildavin Cemeteries if I remember.
All the best
Pete

Hello Jackie and Pete I had a good look through the baptismal records again and like you i could find  no Thomas Brennan to fit with the younger Thomas, and the full 1901 census does not come on line until sometime at the end of the year,or possibly in the  coming year, the information is available, but only by visiting the records office in Dublin,or having someone on the ground in Dublin who could undertake the task for you.I will have another look through any other records i can find, will keep you posted.

hi again
Fortunately, I will be paying a visit to LDS tomorrow, so amongst other things, I shall look up the 1901 census for springfield and ballyredmond. I do hope I find your Brennans.
all the best

hi again
couldn't get springfield, LDS did not appear to have that reel, though springfield is actually in wicklow, but in moyacomb civil parish which is a mixture of carlow and wicklow townlands, from what i saw today.
but here is Brennan, ballyredmond 1901 census

house number 10

patrick brennan     farmer    63  head of family
mary brennan                      60  wife
james brennan                    33  son
john brennan                      31  son
michael brennan                 29  son
mary brennan                     27  daughter
annie  brennan                   25  daughter
katie brennan                     23  daughter
lizzie brennan                     22  daughter

house 11

john brennan         farmer   40  head
margaret brennan               38  wife
michael brennan                  13  son
charles brennan                  10  son
thomas brennan                   8  son
margaret brennan                4  daughter

there is one thomas there, though he was born about 1893, though that is not that far off. considering that from my own experience, looking at my own family history which would be in this catholic parish too, alot of them as adults never really knew accurately how old they were. Usually when i've seen the birth record and seen the gravestone, it is not uncommon for them not to match up.
I hope this has been some help
all the best
