Mystery marriage - help please!
« on: Thursday 23 April 09 21:02 BST (UK) »
I have a Robert STERLING b.c1822 Wark/Simonburn Northumberland, married to Elizabeth LINDSAY (b. Lanchester Durham c1822)  but just cannot find the marriage! Their first child, George wasnt born until 1858 when Elizabeth was approx. 36 years old, so have looked for a previous marriage, again with no results. They are on the 1871 census in Newcastle Upon Tyne, but in 1881 Robert is a widower, Elizabeth probably dying in 1874. There is only one other child, Robert, b. c1860.
Can anyone find a marriage for Elizabeth and Robert please? It seems to be the only way I will find either of their parents.
Thankyou,
Perilous

Hi Pauline,
In 1861 they were in Benwell Newcastle Upon Tyne, where young Robert had been born. Strangely, george had been born in London. Roberts occupation was Joiner.

Hanging in there Michael and pauline!!! I think I may have found parents for Robert Sterling senior on the IGI though - George and Isabella, married 1814 Simonburn.

Robert's family should be traceable from within the Parish of wark or Parish of Simonburm ( Wark Parish was " born" out of Simonburn Parish.)

I notice Elizabeth's birth county is recorded as Leicestershire on 1871 census !

Pauline spotted birth reg of a George in Lambeth ( which was in Surrey, where 1871 says George was born.

A few months befoe a Rob sterling marries in London ( St george Hanover Sq) Dec 1855, to an Elizabeth, but not a Lindsay. I suppose you got that nee name fron one of the children's birth cert ?

Usually ( but not always) first child was born in the vicinity of parents marriage.

When you get a chance, google " english naming pattern"
