This could be John's arrival:

There is a family MCALPIN on the Assisted Immigration list sailed form Plymouth 12 March 1852, arrived Hobsons Bay, Melbourne on the Chowringhee 5 July 1852
George, 39, farmer, Mary 37, Eliza 12, John 9, Margaret 7, Louisa 4.  Disposal list says 'on own account to Melbourne'.
On a separate page are: Isabella 14, Sarah Jane 18, Susan 16, Mary 19; disposal list says 'gone with parents'
All except the 7 and 4yearolds could read and write, all Presbyterian from Armagh ? (Hard to read but I think that's what it is)

This John looks right age and father's name is the same, and the mother's almost exact.

Looking at google Armagh is a county of Ireland. And Newry is a parish in Armagh. Johns birth place is listed as Newry when he married Mary BEACON in 1868. So I think it is the right family in 1852 coming to Melbourne.

Thanks Cando, Yes I believe that it is the same family. They started as bakers in the Abbotsford area and then went into flour manufacturing.

Leonie on Page 18 there is a reference to John McAlpin, baker in 1879 and a building in Collingwood.
