3rd Royal Lancs Regt Militai Pre 1851
« on: Friday 24 April 09 14:55 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me please with the service records of John Leedale who was in Limerick in 1851 and then in Preston in 1861, in the above Regiment.

In 1861 he was a Staff Sergeant stationed in Preston Lancashire and in 1871 was Quarter Master Sergeant & Chelsea Pensioner living at the Barracks in Preston.

I am  interested also in his service before 1851, where he joined etc. His first child was born in Limerick in 1851 but have not been able to find a record for the marriage so don't know where he was then.

He originates from Whitechapel, London, born about 1817.

Kind regards,
Calmar

Thanks Shaun,

The link you gave led to Francis Leedale which could be his son.
Interesting.

It looks as if his Militia service papers have been added to the ones covering his 63rd Regiment service. The reference WO97/766/48 should be a microfilm covering the 63rd men discharged before the end of 1854. You can order a copy at 40p a page. You will be lucky to get any family history information, as they did not record much before about 1870.

The 63rd Foot returned from Madras in August 1847.

Hello

I have quite a lot of information regarding Schoolmaster Sergeant John Leedale who was my Great great grandfather. It would be good to share any info. What is your connection to him?
Mike

The files from WO97 ie the pre 1913 discharges of the British Army can be found on Find My Past...
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.
