SMALE Immigration - South Australia
« on: Monday 27 April 09 22:46 BST (UK) »
Hi ,

This is a long shot but I am trying to trace Humphrey Smale and family.  I believe they left UK some time after 1861, but I don't know where they went.  Would you be able to check and see if they came to South Australia?  He should have been travelling with wife Susan and children:  Jethro, Sarah, Alma, Mary, William, Amelia and John.  I would be very grateful, but please don't do it if it's difficult.

Thanks,

Sunic

Hi Sunic,

I have moved this out to the main board. Immigration to SA from this period would need to be done at the library, but I see no sign of any of this family in SA BMD's.  :'(

All the Best..........Kris  :)

Now I  had a quick look at  the census and if your   Jethro Smale was born
1850 - Bratton Clovelly, Devon, England  he is on the 1881 census

Now  one of  his children  is  born NEW ZEALAND

So  an assumption  is  perhaps  the whole family  went  to NZ

Humphrey Smale  is  on  the 1891 census living in London Widower and boot maker same occupation as in earlier census but age is out a couple of years
he is living with 18 year grandaughter Maud Smale  born in Surrey

kind  thoughts JEnn

Hi Sunic

Just adding to Jenn's find  (and assuming that the Jethro SMALE,  born Devon, is yours).    :)

From the New Zealand BDM (online) index :

BIRTH  1876

1876 / 6376   SMALE - Ernest Francis

Parents:    Jethro and Fanny
