Some Latin Snipetts
« on: Tuesday 28 April 09 18:03 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help with these bits of Latin?

Manor of Marsh ? ?  ? members. Also:

From the total this must be 1/2d but what exactly is the squiggle?

Hi Peter,

I think the first may be

Manerium de Marsh cum membris

Could that be the same as this one, near Montgomery?

http://www.scit.wlv.ac.uk/~cm1822/gough4.html

As to the second, vjd usually means 6d., so four times would be two shillings.

I would expect that to be written ijs or possibly xxivd

Any use to you?

Roger

correction - altered jis to ijs

Hi Roger,

No it's not the same one, this manor of Marsh was in Shropshire. You are right with 6d - I misread the total for 26 men as 13d whereas it should be 13s. (I only had four "vjd"s on the scan as there didn't seem much point in showing all 26) I thought 1/2d wasn't much of a fine.

I wasn't sure what it was before membris - it looks like an "A" but would make more sense if it was a number?

Hi Peter,

The first image:

Manoriam de Marsh curia membris

or a member or limb court of the Manor of Marsh.  The stylised "A" is a divider and has no other significance.

The second image:
absolutely 6d, written as vid

Susan

Susan,

As you're obviously more Latin literate than I perhaps I could be very cheeky and ask if you can make out anything useful from an earlier thread of mine?
