james cushaw Quillimaine

 I have ancestor james Cushaw can only find him in 1861 census
he is stoker in navy says born about 1836 in Quillimaine (thats the spelling on census) 
  i need advise on where to look for details on birth and is it possible

Hi Gillian  I am not sure either but on his marriage certificate has no name for father but under rank or profession of father states  Of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope

 :( There are no documents in NAAIRS or Ancestry24 for that surname if you google Quillimaine there is a place  Quelimane in Mozambique. This seems to be the most likely spot as there is an article on galton.org that references a Quillimane in the Portaguese territories. There is also a letter at www.livingstoneonline.ucl.ac.uk mentioning Quillimaine river in Livingstones correspondence. Other artilcles all seem to indicate that Quillimaine is in East Africa in that time.

Hi Gillian Thankyou very much for your help much appreciated   I dont suppose I will ever find out any more  but was very interested to find out his nationality
  All I know he was in the Navy and died 1871 in navy hospital but could get no information from there  regards  Janet
