Dear Haydn,
just to expand your quest further ...

my family name is Metcalf and they moved from Lincolnshire to Audenshaw in the
1870/1880's. One of them was Mary Jane Metcalf who was born in Hull c.1860 but
the family moved to Owston Ferry to join their relatives, before the mass exodus
to Audenshaw. My Great Grand parents lived at 2 Church Street which is only a
stones throw from your ancestors.

Small world ....

I look forward to your reply.

Hi Snorky

Good to hear from you. Yes I have a fair bit of information on the Metcalf line going back to the 1600's. There seems to be quite a few people out there researching the Metcalfs.

Maybe we could contact each other off list and share information. I would love to know where you fit into the tree.

Look forward to hearing from you

Haydn

Actually it was No. 3 Church Street ...
My Mary Jane died before 1901 but it was a common combination of Christian names in our family.
Another branch of Metcalfs were living at Hooley Hill before the Audenshaw branch arrived. Both
branches may be derived from 'Blind Jack' Metcalf, one of his daughters went to live in this area
and it was common for families to move from relatives to relatives, wherever the work was.

I also noticed that my female ancestors were in the hat trade in this area!

My conversion to broadband should vastly improve my researches.
Keep in touch.
