Thanks for the help with posting .. I'm easily confused
It doesn't look like my last message to you went through. I was replying to your question about the Courts name. Please excuse me if I'm repeating myself here...
On my mother's side of the family, the eldest son was often given his mother's maiden name as a middle name. James Courts' mother was Martha Courts of Fowey, Cornwall.
As far as the Clare Galway question ... I wouldn't be surprised if Henry did settle there after he left the Army in 1845. By the way, I see I've made a mistake in his birth year on the timeline. He was discharged at age 48, so he must have been born around 1797, not 1801. Math was never my strong suit
Do you think its possible that Elizabeth was from that area? You'll see that John was born in Galway (too bad it doesn't say exactly where) in 1828. But at that time both batallions of the Rifle Brigade were stationed overseas. It would make sense that she stayed behind, especially since she also had a four-year-old.
It would also make sense that they then retired there...
Funnily enough when James (b 1824) retired from the Army in the 1860's, he and his family also returned to Ireland. I'm just not sure where he settled. But James Courts enlisted in Mullingar and Cecille Elizabeth was married there. I thought they might have gone back to Granard, but maybe they went to Clare Galway, too...
Mysteries, mysteries!
