Hi Kate

Thomas WARREN's parish would, I think, be St Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London.  When I returned home I had a look at the IGI and spotted a baptism 22 Feb 1746 for a Thomas Bateman WARREN, son of Thomas & Ann Jane.  I then kicked myself for not noting exactly how he recorded his signature at marriage.  I'll take another look next time I'm at HRO.

His parish at marriage would be his parish of settlement, recorded so that, if he or his family fell on hard times, they would not become a liability for Portsmouth Overseers.  However, a settlement parish could be 'earned' from apprenticeship placement etc. so it is not necessarily his place of birth.

Thanks Dee-Jay, again much appreciated.  I look forward to seeing what Thomas's signature is.   As stated before, Thomas served in the Navy for approx. 40 years.  He died 20 Oct 1795, so the time frame seems to be right for the baptism you found.

Kind Regards

Kate

Sadly, nothing significant to add.  Thomas signed 'T. Warren' and his bride signed 'Ann Peates'.

Thanks so much for that Dee-jay ;D.  I really appreciate you going back for another look.  Unfortunate that there was no further info, but I know there is somewhere hiding that all important clue.

Once again I express my thanks.
