Adding a few bits about George ...

Here is his father in 1851, now remarried:
HO107/1672 7 6
West Dean, Wiltshire

Henry England, head, 59, Farm Labourer, b. Wilts Pitton
Charlotte, wife, 52, b. Hants Awbridge?
Edmund, son, unm, 23, Farm Labourer, b. Wilts West Dean
William Deadman, stepson, unm, 21, Farm Labourer, b. Hants Trenchmoor
David Deadman, stepson, 14, Farm Labourer, b. do.
George Wiltshire, lodger, unm, 36, Stone Mason, b. Hants Millbrook

George England's christening is on the IGI, showing mother Hannah:

George England, 7 Nov 1824 West Dean, Wiltshire
Father Henry England, mother Hannah

Other children with parents Henry and Hannah England in the same batch:
Ann, 11 Sep 1814
Charles, 4 Nov 1815
Maria, 30 Mar 1817
Harriet, 18 April 1819
Thomas, 25 Dec 1820
William, 12 Dec 1822
Edmund, 20 May 1827
Emma, 2 May 1830

Searching the IGI for a Henry England to Hannah marriage around 1813/1814, there's:
Henry England - Hannah Tubb
16 March 1814 West Dean, Wiltshire

 :)

I'm afraid of no ghost

Hi Andrew,
So Henry England second wife as shown in 1851 census seems to have been Charlotte Deadman- that would hav ebeen her married name presumably as she brought 2 sons to the marriage...

Great haul there from IGI and Tati's trawl thru it...

Dear 'charlotteCH', 'Tati' and 'Gaie'

Thank you so very much for taking the time and trouble to help me with my enquiry (my apologies for the delay is responding.... I've been away from the desk).

There is a lot of information here to absorb and 'get my head around'.

I am still not sure, however, how I shall progress with finding out where Harry Lewis England was born but I am going to the NA in July (to pursue my 'hobby' of researching the Great War) and will see if Harry Lewis' father was in the Army or the Navy around his birth date.

Anything else that you (or anyone) could suggest would be warmly and gratefully received

Thanks once again

Andrew

So... since my original postings all those years ago, I am no further forward, despite all the help from those kind members who helped me back in 2009.
How? and more importantly where, was Harry Louis England, or Harry Lewis England, born in France?
Can anyone help me by pointing me in the right direction please?
Thank you, in advance
Andrew

Hi,

They don't seem to have been registered in overseas births (civilian or military - you can find these indexes on places like findmypast).

Do you have the original records of the baptisms that took place in Hampshire in 1855 for the two children born France? (Harriett M and Harry Louis/Lewis). Any additional information there?

Attempting to track the family:
George England marries Mary Ann Southwell in 1852, Lymington (Sep quarter).
Do you have this certificate? I'm struggling to find George in the 1851 census and it would be good to know his occupation at this time.

1853 Mar quarter, a son Harry or Henry is born to them (new GRO index has mother's name "Sauthwell").

Since your Harry was apparently born about a year later and consistently gives his birthplace as France, this could be a case where one child died young and the family named the next child the same.

George's employment around 1852/3, just before they went to France, could be the key to cracking this one.

Dear Jorose

Thank you so much for your reply.... I am all very new to delving into family trees and the research required around them and I need to digest about what you are saying, telling me.

Thank you for contacting me... I'll no doubt get back to you as soon as I can

Andrew
