D.D.(Doctor of Divinity); was on Commission for the Maintenance of Church Discipline 21st Oct. 1634; attempted to read the Service Book " but not being very dexterous he dishonoured it"; Sep. ? 26th Aug. 1639 "for immorality, breaking the Sabbath, affirming the nobles were taking the crowns off the King's head to set on their own, calling the Covenant a black (block?) Covenant". He died in England Feb. 1653, aged about 53.

Couldn't find much about "The Commission for Maintenance etc", but it seems to have been a committee created  to take measures against Catholics in Scotland. Not sure how one would dishonour a service book by not being dextrous. Maybe he dropped it, or tore a page?

Hi there,
I get......D.D. was on Commission for the maintenance of church discipline 21st Oct 1634. Attempted to read the service book but not being very dexterous he (dishonoured)? it.
(possibly 'deported' abbreviated)?? before 26th Aug 1639, "for immorality, breaking the Sabbath, affirming the nobles were taking the crown off the king's head to set on their own, calling the covenant a block covenant" he died in England Feb 1653, aged about 53.
If that 3 letter word is an abbreviation of deported seems he served his time then returned to England.
                         Hope this helps, Renaud  :)

I think you are right Mike and on the strength of this the 3 letter word, which I think is an abbreviation and looks like (dep.) could mean deposed.

Looked up Henry Scrimgeour in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. The only Henry S. died too early. There's a John S. for whom the first two dates in your extract seem correct, but death date is out by 10yrs.
I'll send you a copy of the article by PM.

The accuracy of parish records depends on the person who wrote it and the quality of their information, and two dates and similar-sounding events matching seems quite a coincidence.  It's maybe something to consider if all else fails.

I now think it says "dishaunted" rather than "dishonoured", and "dep. before 26th Aug."

According to Webster's dictionary "dishaunt" means to leave; to quit; to cease to haunt.
