PATTERSON/HUME/BORTHWICK - 1851 census please
« on: Wednesday 06 May 09 04:10 BST (UK) »
I was hoping someone could help me find the 1851 census for the Patterson family.
Thomas Hume Patterson, born 1842 in Haddington (can't find his birth entry on SP).
Parents David Patterson (b. 1811) and Christian Hume (b. 1809), married in Dunbar.

I would also love information for David and Christian in 1841 (assuming they were married).

If not, David Pattersons parents are Robert Patterson and Catherine Borthwick.
And Christian's parents were Thomas Hume and Mary Borthwick.  (I believe they are sisters).

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you very much.

I do have Humes in the area myself (check the username ;D) so I did have a wee bit of information on Thomas and Mary already. I did believe at one time Thomas and my own ancestor, Adam, could have been brothers, but I haven't been able to confirm it.

1841:

Address: Newtonlees Stable, Dunbar
Thomas Hume, m, 60, farmer, b. outside county
Mary Hume, f, 65, -, b. in county

Margaret MacVey, f, 20, female servant, b. in county

1851:

Address: Lawfield Farm House, Oldhamstocks
Peter H. Hume, head, unm., 50, farmer of 850 acres (emp. 19 labourers), b. Dunbar
Mary Borthwick, mother, wid., 76, widow, b. Dunbar
Mary Hume, sister, unm., 41, -, b. Dunbar

Mary Runciman, serv., unm., 28, house servant, b. Whitekirk
Elizabeth Purves, serv., unm., 22, house servant, b. Dunbar
James Cribbes, serv., unm., 18, groom, b. Whitekirk

Thomas died 1849, and was buried 2nd July 1849. Mary was buried 17th October 1854. Both are buried in Dunbar Parish Church graveyard. Also, there is a picture of Thomas Hume (or possibly his son) on the Scran website. I used to have a subscription for it, but it has ran out.

Pam and Hume:

Thank you very much for the information.  I certainly appreciate it.

Hume, that would be nice if we could find a connection.
I will check out the scran website on your suggestion.  If I do sign up I will let you know in the event you need anything.

Thanks again to you both.

All the best!
McCann

. . . I don't suppose anyone has found Robert Paterson and Catherine Bothwick in 1841 or 1851?  (I believe Catherine was Mary's sister, and possibly 9 years apart - so their ages would be close).

Hi again,

Couldn't see anything positive when I checked. :-\ Do you have an occupation for Robert and maybe a list of other children apart from David?

No I don't have anything else just now but I will soon be ordering some certs from SP and will hopefully get a lead that way.
Thank you for looking, hume.
