The name VARTY is fairly prominent in the Maidstone area going on the numbers with the name on FreeBMD.

I am only guessing that it is 'Vartry' as it is not entirely clear on the cert.  Certainly the first letter looks like 'V', the next 'a' and the last 2 'r' and 'y'.  I am beginning to think that what I thought might be a 't' isn't at all as all the other 't's on the cert look alike and nothing like whatever the letter might be in the witness's name.  I think the 3rd letter might be 'r' but not entirely certain of that either.

I'm going mad - I thought I posted a reply but I can't find it. I think the witness's surname might be Farley.

Definitely VARTEY ... look at the second E in Elizabeth - it's identical to the letter between a definite T and a flourished Y.

Looking up VART* on FreeBMD proves interesting for this particular family.

If you're going mad, then so am I ???

I saw your post and added to it the suggestion of Varley,

Then found myself back here :o

I think the posts have somehow got into a sort of loop?
