The children of Walter and Louisa please
« on: Sunday 10 May 09 10:20 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Please will someone try to help me decipher the names of William's daughters?

Census RG 9 Piece 2308 Folio 12 Page 21

We have  Walter Smith   50 Head
                Louisa Smith   54 Wife
                T?        Smith   20 Daughter
                Walter Smith  18  Son
                 ??       Smith   11 Daughter
                 Diveres Smith   7 Son

The census transcript names them as Longner and Unicer but I am far from convinced.  I am having trouble finding the family in 1851 and 1841 so I am hoping the girls might give me a clue!

Thanks Cheryl

1871 shows last child as Diverous, but having trouble finding any birth regs for them

I think the first daughter's name starts with T comparing it to the T in Thomas further down the page, could be Toaquer, 2nd daughter Elmier?

With Smith as a surname, it's a change from John and Mary  ;D
Do you know if it's a second marriage for either of them, could the children be under a different surname?

Thanks Barbara for the attempt. I agree fully with the names beginning with T and E. I have been thinking about whether one parent remarried or even whether they had a total name change! Anything is possible with the Smiths!

I am fairly sure that an IGI reference for a Dioory Smith baptised Helpston, Northampton 1842 is in fact Diverus, Dives or Divers depending with census you look at. Diverus married my Grand great aunt if you can have such a thing.

Thanks again

Cheryl

I know the age is out with  The one I posted but it looks like a possiblity to me :-[

Could the daughter born 1841 be Lavinia just badly spelt?

This looks a possibility for Walter's birth
Sep 1843 Stamford 14 562
Stamford district covers Ryhall, Rutland which is near Belmesthorpe, Walter's birthplace (Bellmansthorpe on 1861 census)

Trying to make out the next child's birthplace, could be Ketton which is also in Stamford district - can't see a suitable birth reg, but then there is the odd one just listed as 'female'

Thanks Barbara

That is a real possibility. There are strong historic family links with the Ryall area.  There is another Diverus in Rutland at this time

In 1871 census Diverous is aged 20, so a little older than the 1854 birth year given in 1861.  Louisa's birthplace not known, although Geddington in 1861 census.

I've searched under just about everything to find them in 1851, and 1841, but I think as hawkers they may have escaped the census.  Have looked for marriages 1861-1871 for oddly named Smith girls in the Rutland/Northants area - again no luck.

Will have another go later
