So it appears that the 1851/52 census entry is not yours then and your William did die in 1892. If that's the case, then here is William and Mary Ann in Walkerton, Bruce County on the 1891 census (there are two pages per image and William and family are the last entries on the top page):

The 1881 and 1891 Canada are searchable by name (with images) at the Library and Archives Canada website. Here's a link:

The 1901 and 1911 census can be searched for free at this site:

The transcriptions are linked to the census images at LAC.

Oh thats wonderful. Thank you. I dont want to appear rude, or completey thick, but when did the census start in Canada, From all the wonderful information that i have gained from you all, it would appear that williams family came from Ireland so its just the names now. I am so pleased and happy and its a hugh thank you. Mark

The first census .. for most locations in Canada is 1841 ... same as in UK. There may be some that were taken, before that (and that survive) for certian places ,,, but they are fairly rare I think.
William Stephenson - born 1814 at Doncaster West Yorkshire - married Mary Scott at Cottingham East Yorkshire (Hull) in 1838. Williams parents I believe were another Wm Stephenson and an Alice Carter - married Cantley Parish W Yorks (Doncaster) in 1811..... Other east riding names are Nicholls (Bridlington, Yorks and Wigan Lancs.) and the surname Withernwick.

LAC has a catalogue of census returns on microfilm from 1666-1901. Of course most of the early census records didn't survive. The earliest census database available online is for the 1851/1852 census (that census was supposed to be done in 1851 but delays caused it to be done in 1852). You can get more information on what census returns are available at the LAC website:

It looks like the 1851/52 census entry Karen found could still be your William. I found the marriage registrations for some of William and Mary Ann's children and they born in Peel County.

In case you don't have the marriages, here's what I found in the Ontario marriage database at Ancestry:

Alexander Hamilton, 26, cabinet maker, born Bolton, Ontario, son of William R Hamilton and Mary Anne Temple married Isabella Nickle, 27, born Paris, Ontario, daughter of Thomas Nickle and Isabella Fair on 22 Jul 1880 in Walkerton, Bruce County, Ontario. Witnesses: Fred. Wm. Hamilton of Teeswater and Elizabeth Nickle of Walkerton.

Williamina Hamilton, 21, born Chinguacoosy, Ontario , daughter of William R and Mary Hamilton married George E Wakefield, 21, butcher, born Puslinch, Ontario, son of George and Phebe Wakefield on 20 Feb 1883 in in Teeswater, Bruce County, Ontario. Witnesses: W.A. Wakefield and Marion Hamilton, all of Teeswater.

Marion Hamilton, 28, born Bolton Village, Ontario, daughter of W R and Mary Hamilton married Walter J Coates, 28, merchant, born Clinton, Ontario, son of William and Sarah Coates on 21 Oct 1885 in Teeswater, Bruce County, Ontario. Witnesses: Robt Coates of Clinton and Lizzie Hamilton of Teeswater.

Edmund Hamilton, 22, cabinet maker, born Teeswater, Ontario, son of William and Mary Hamilton married Annie Roos, 20, born Preston, Ontario, daughter of Charles and Bridget Roos on 13 Oct 1885 in Galt, Waterloo County, Ontario. Witnesses: F.W. Hamilton of Teeswater and F.C. Roos of Preston.

William the Carpenter has religion as Presb in 1871 Census. This also appears to be the religion of the one William we have in the 1852 Census.

William the Wagon Maker gives his religion as Meth in the 1871 and 1881 censuses.

I haven't been able to find a suitable second William in the 1852 so far, although William the Wagon Maker s/b there somewhere; I don't know if any census pages might be missing?

I will look up both Williams in the 1871 Census on Wednesday.
