Hi,

I need some help & advise please with regard to identifying the publication date of an old religious book which has been passed down through my family.

The book is entitled:

" The Life of OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR, JESUS CHRIST. By THE REVd J FLEETWOOD.

It belonged to my Gt Gt Aunt and has a small red leather card stuck on the inside which reads ' MARY JONES 1857 '.

On the bottom of the prefix page it reads:

LONDON: THOMAS KELLY, PASTERNOSTER ROW.
                  MDCCCLV.

I would love to know a bit more about this book, how old it may be etc, so I'd appreciate any help that someone more knowledgeable than myself, may be able to help.

Barbara.

If you Google the title it will come up in Google books.

MDCCCLV is the publishing date 1855

Hi Barbara - I know that book! Or, at least, the cover. A copy used to belong to my GGG grandfather and is now in Sao Paolo. Anyway, I did a bit of research on it and, as far as I can remember, the first edition was published in 1832. After that date, there were several more editions published both in England and in the US (it seems to have been quite popular).

Hello,

As Rog says the date of your copy is 1855. There were however numerous editions. A good place to look is in the British Library which it is now possible to search on line.

As you will see they have about 40 odd copies of varying dates. I think the earliest I saw was 1771.
