Missing family - where did they go?
« on: Tuesday 12 May 09 11:26 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am stuck and have been for some time trying to trace what happened to a family of 4 who disappear from UK census records after 1851.  I have come to the conclusion they left the country as surely at least one of them would have appreared on one census or other after 1851.

One of them was born in Ireland so they could possibly have returned there in which case I have little hope of finding what happened to them.  I am thinking it would be best to rule out them going to another country first.  I haven't found concrete evidence apart from the father possible turning up on a US census in Iowa.

Anyway the family are Patrick Mulheran b Ireland 1813 wife Ann or Lavinia Ann born Yorkshire 1813 her daughter Ann H Hinchliffe born Honley Yorkshire 1832 and their son Joseph born Honley Yorkshire 1847.  They married in 1847.  She was previously widowed.  Any assistance greatly appreciated  :)

Hi Milliepede,

Joseph is possibly staying with his brother Thomas in 1861 (as Joseph Hinchcliffe): RG9/3243 70 10

There's a 50 year old widowed Patrick Mulheran, Optician, b. Ireland, visiting a Judge family in Bradford
(RG9/3326 46 26) - was Patrick ever an optician?  :-\

Hi Tati  :)

I don't know of a brother Thomas born to Patrick.  Josephs mother had a son Thomas during her first marriage but in 1861 he was married and living in Wiltshire.  Is the Joseph you have found in Yorkshire?

Patrick was shown as a land surveyor on the marriage cert in 1847 and grocer on the 1851 census (his wife was a shopkeeper in 1841)

I will see if I can look up those references (have never tried with anything but names before!) and check them out thank you.

Thank you yes that's them marrying in 1847 :)

I really wish I could find out what happened to them  :'(  I hope they stayed together as a family but to find even one of them would be a blessing.

Thanks very much for the suggestions.   I have tried a few possible deaths already and they aren't the people I want unfortunately.  I am loathe to spend more money on wrong certificates have spent enough already on this frustrating search for information!

If any of them died after 1861 then they would be on the census for that year and they just aren't to be found.  I can't understand where they disappeared to.  If they all died between 1851 and 1861?  Possible I suppose.

The daughter Ann being 19 in 1851 could have married and stayed put but I haven't found her yet.  Even so she should be on a census somewhere and traceable by place and date of birth.

Can't find them as a family emigrating to any of the usual places.  Never been as stuck as I am with this little lot  ???
