it would help to see a bit more of the writing on the page - is the first letter a C or an L? The nearest I've got so far is a Litterman - but admit that's just a guess!

Looks like Cottoner, are there other occupations on the page to do with the Cotton industry?  Could you please give the census reference so that we can look at the full page?

Barbara - cottoner does sound good - although some background would help - what was s/he doing on other censuses, to give an idea of the likely occupations?

I think the two ll(s) are actually a capital 'M' and the occupation is:

  " C Miner"  (coal miner)

looking at the counties being researched - Yorkshire and Lancashire have collieries, but they both also have cotton mills so it will be interesting to see what other occupations are on the page
