Never mind  ;D - you live and learn. However, I thought about it overnight (Life? What life?) and it could actually work either way, depending upon whether the modern legalese habit of dropping commas was also used then ...

There's a great deal of difference in meaning between

"... to answer an indictment deferred last sessions by James Grosvenor."

and ...

"... to answer an indictment, deferred last sessions, by James Grosvenor."

The second would be a similar form to Sarah's complaint. The first would imply that James was a magistrate.

I guess it doesn't really matter. I'm intrigued to know what a pipemaker and the gentleman co-partner of an ironworks have in common though!

Appparently Henry Rainsford wasn't a partner until the 1750s. The main partner in the ironworks was one John Smitheman!
