Searching for Wives Names New Jersey
« on: Sunday 17 May 09 13:42 BST (UK) »
HiYall

Joseph Tivey born 1892 in Long Eaton Derbyshire, emigrated to the states as did two of his brothers. So far I have his naturalisation records, ships manifests, USA census info and WWI & WWII Draft Reg cards.

Family rumour has it that he had three wives and I am trying to find out their names and when/where he married. As far as I know he was with his brothers most of the time in Pawtucket New Jersey, though his WWI Draft card has his address as Philadelphia in 1917. By 1920 he is still unmarried and living with one of his older brothers.

By the 1930's census he is in Clifton Pasaic NJ; with a wife Helen (Born Hungary & Austria) The census states that he married at the age of 27  which would suggest that he married abt 1921 to Helen who had been married previously as there is  son with them surname Seabridge (sic).

By his 1942 WWII draft reg card he is married to Bessie and is residing 88 Bogert Street, Toyowa (sic) Boro, Passaic

Can anyone help find both Bessie and Helen's names and if possible a third wife for him, in the New Jersey?

Cheers  :-*
Jan

Totowa is a town in New Jersey - maybe that's the one you thought was Toyowa?

Is there a Pawtucket in New Jersey?  I've only heard of the one in Rhode Island.

There's a UK incoming passenger list from May, 1958 which has Joseph Tivey born 23 Dec. 1892 & wife Bessie born 2 Oct. 1909 going to an address in Long Eaton.

Social Security Death Index has Bessie M. Tivey who was born 2 Oct. 1909 & died May 1992.  Her Social Security # was issued in New Jersey before 1951.

It appears that Joseph's stepson Edward Seabridge died recently.
Social Security Death Index
Edward P. Seabridge
Born 13 Jul. 1916 & died 5 Mar. 2009
Last resided in Titusville, Brevard Co., Florida
Social Security # was issued in New Jersey before 1951.

I found a death notice for him in the newspaper Florida Today, but no mention of who his parents were, survivors, etc.

Here's a brief obit:  http://www.waynetoday.com/NC/0/668.html
And another:  http://www.legacy.com/FloridaToday/Obituaries.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonId=125050949

There are two trees on Ancestry that list Joseph Tivey's wife/Edward Paul Seabridge's mother as Helen Marjives.  No exact birth or death date is given for Helen, but one says that Joseph died 22 May 1960 in Paterson, New Jersey.

Thanks again Shellyesq  :-*

I have just found an incoming passenger list for him in 1958 for Joseph and Bessie visiting rellies in Long Eaton ~ if he died in 1960 and Bessie died 1992 then I dont think there was another wife, unless it was in between Helen and Bessie or before Helen.

Thanks for your help ;D

Cheers

On rootsweb.com, there are 3 trees that mention Joseph & Helen.  One says that Joseph married a Lil Hallem, then Helen, then Elizabeth (unknown last name).  Perhaps Bessie was a nickname for Elizabeth.  Those trees haven't been updated in a while, but you could try e-mailing the owners to see what they know.  One says Lil & Joseph had a child named Hallem Tivey, born abt. 1920.

If you go to newslibrary.com & search under Bessie Tivey, it brings up the beginning of her obit in the Wenatchee World newspaper.  It says she was born 2 Oct. 1909 to John M. and Loretta (Goldsberry) Sullivan at Republic Ferry (presumably in the state of Washington).  It says she married William Seabridge in 1928 at Olympia, Wash. and they later divorced.  She married Joe Tivey in 1941 in New Jersey and was a practical nurse.

I can't quite figure out how Joseph was with Helen in 1930 and had a stepson named Seabridge, but was with Bessie in 1942.   ???
