*COMPLETED* Surname in 1851 help please!!
« on: Sunday 17 May 09 15:55 BST (UK) »
I've found a family on the 1851 census that I've been hunting for ages and now can't decipher the brothers name!

The reference is HO 107 and what looks like 2434 but very faded.
Details are Sarah Sewell, head, widow, grocer, Main Street, Cockermouth, her children James and Agnes and her Brother Isaac ?? (hoping this will lead me to Sarah's maiden name and then hopefully her husband)

It looks like Grane or Grare to me but any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!

Oooh, terrible image!

Searching for a Sewell to a Sarah marriage in Cumberland 1841/1851, there's this:

Mar 1844 Cockermouth 25 67
John Sewell - Sarah Grave

Maybe?  :)

Issac do 25 *something*
Sarah do 19 Baker
Agness 4

Thanks to everyone for the rapid "rootschat" response!!

It is definately "Grave" and the marriage looks an almost definite as well (thanks again Tati)

As Junev says, it is clearly Grave in 1861, but what are the Sewells indexed as, as they dont show in 1861 by this surname?

Another interesting thing (for me anyways) is that Sarah is widowed in 1851 with a 6 year old and 4 year old, but by 1861 she has a 7 year old as well?

Hi,

They are down as Sewell in 1861. Just put in Sarah Sewell Cockermouth and there she was!

By the way I have a widow with children born after her supposed husband died.

Yes, you're right Junev, its just me having a senior moment. It was James that I had lost, but the rest of them are right there as you say.
