Mining Accident 1914 + Newport Docks + German to British Subject
« on: Sunday 17 May 09 16:43 BST (UK) »
Hi.

Three puzzles in one!  Who likes a challenge?

Can anyone give me any information on a big mining accident in 1914 in Monmouthshire?  My relative Charles John PETERSON died Q2 1914, (registered in Newport) -  he was a miner and apparently died in the accident.

Charles was originally a sailor (born in Germany in 1869) and most likely came into Newport Docks.  He married a local girl, Bridget COUGHLAN in 1893 and they had seven children between then and 1912.  Can anyone tell me what sort of boats came into Newport docks around 1900 please as he would have been a crew member.  Are there any records of ships crews anywhere?

On the 1901 census, Charles is listed under "where born"  as Germany - British Subject.  Does anyone know where or how he would have become a British Subject?

If you dont have any definite answers, can you point me in the right direction please.  I'd be very grateful.

Thanks

Lin
