Edinburgh Poorhouse, Craiglockhart.

Iam looking for information, regarding the above. I found that one of my gt grandfather's sisters was born here, in 1871.

At the time of her birth, on 3rd July 1971, she was registered as an Isabella Connor. Connor being her mother, Ann's maiden name. At this point, however, Isabella's father, William Morrison, appears to have assumed the surname of Connor.

I have looked at a number of sites,  that give a brief history of Craiglockhart. I am just curious as to why Isabella was born here, when her brother James, my gt grandfather was born a few years earlier, at Kitchens Court.

Any suggestions, would be great. Also suggestions about the different names used to register their children.

I hope that I have posted this message in the right place. If not, I would appreciate if someone could move it for me.

Have you looked at this site:

In 1871, this poorhouse was very new.  Edinburgh City Archives have custody of the records.

Hello

Don't be too optimistic about what you might find in the Edinburgh City Archives. I'm sure they have some records for the Poorhouse but several people have told me that the admission records (which is presumably what you want to see) were consigned to a skip and disposed of by the Social Work Department about 30 years ago!

As regrds the reason why a child would be born in the Poorouse, I would expect that the mother was destitute - perhaps her husband had deserted her.

Hello again Jessie.

I have had another wee look at viewed certificates I have on SP.

When Ann's birth was registered, it was on the same page as another birth at Craiglockhart. Informant for both is same, although hard to read! This might still point to couple being apart, although William's name is stated.

They then had another daughter, Alice, born December 1872, at South Cobbinshaw. William is the informant on this birth.

Sadly, Ann died 22nd January 1878, stating William as husband.

Makes me wonder if they separated, and got back together, or, indeed, if it suited them to give the impression that they were apart, to ensure that Ann received health care.

No one tells you about all of the possibilities that you might uncover, when you begin your family searches!
