Advice required on tracing an Irish relative - Completed
« on: Tuesday 19 May 09 06:49 BST (UK) »
The following relative of mine is in the 1841 census in Scotland. In the 1841 census the family is shown as having five children all born in the area of Scotland as shown on the census. This would indicate that Owen and his wife Margaret (born in Meath, Ireland and would seem to be two years older than Owen) have been in Scotland from at least 1831.

My question is how do I go about finding their marriage certificate? I am assuming at this stage that they were married in Ireland. Secondly, how do I go about finding their birth date/place, etc in Ireland?

To my knowledge the Lynch side of my family was certainly not Catholic (fathers side). On my mothers side - Ryan and Brady from Ireland they were as Irish and as Catholic as you could get.

Name: LYNCH , Owen
Address: Village of Rhonehouse(869)
Parish: Kelton
Relationship: head of household
Marital Status: married
Occupation: LABOURER
Age: 30
Born: born Cavan Ireland
Household No: 10/68

Civil registration of Catholic marriages in Ireland began in 1864 (1845 for others) so there will be no marriage certificate. Birth and death registration also began in 1864. Before these dates you need to look at church records, if they exist, but to do so you need to know the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland) to determine where they might have gone to church).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks for your advice aghadowey . I suspected it would not be straight forward

I have a couple of other Irish relatives around the mid 1880's, so I will leave these couple of 'Ireland to Scotland' ones alone for a while and come back to them at a later time in conjunction with my Irish ones that came out to Australia.

Regards and thanks for your help.
