William Wilson Birkett of Broughton-West
« on: Tuesday 19 May 09 14:18 BST (UK) »
Would anyone have access to christening records for the Broughton area.  I am looking for the parents of William Wilson Birkett born 1823 Broughton.  I can find nothing on the IGI.  William married Elizabeth Williamson at the Chapel of Seathwaite about 1844.
A suggestion for the parents are Daniel Birkett 1794 Seathwaite & Ann but I cannot connect them.  Neither can I find a marriage for Daniel & Ann.
Any help would be appreciated - have hit a brick wall.

Thank you.
Sandra

Sandra  -  hi   :)

There is a family in 1841 living at Steep Head, Kirkby Irleth, Seathwaite, which is headed by Daniel and Ann Birkett and includes a William b. 1823

Do you have that record - would you like it if not  :D
The sub-registration district was Broughon, for hat record.

William's marriage certificate will show  his father's name and occupation  :)

Thank you that would be great. I never did find him in 1841.
So it does look as if Daniel 1794 Seathwaite, son of John & Jane could be correct. His father John died before Daniel was born & was buried a pauper.  His Mother Jane may then have married John Tyson in 1798.
Its still all conjecture but I then wonder if John could have been the brother of Joseph Birkett who married Dinah Stockdale.
All small bits of information but it is coming together.

Many Thanks.

Well  -  here's that family in 1841   :)

1841
HO107.  P. 529/15  Fol. 5  Pg. 5

Steep Head,  Kirkby Ireleth, Seathwaite

BIRKETT
Daniel   46  Slate Quarryman
Ann   48
William  18
Mary   15
Dinah  21
John  20

Thomas  4
Matilda  2

All born in county except Thomas and Matilda.

In 1851 Matilda says born  Ulpham, Cumberland.

Also, in 1851 they are living 2 doors away from what looks like William's family, although William is not home  :)     Do you have that ?

Thank you very much.  4 of those siblings I had no record of.
I kept all the census records on Ancestry not realising when the subscription ended I would'nt be able to access them again !!!!  Think I remember Willaim being away from home - that must be the 1851 census.
Matilda's birth will be Ulpha which is where the family lived later.
The christian names all fit with previous & future generations.

Thanks again.

So the marriage certificate should show father Daniel, slate or copper miner   :)

Apparently this is High Bleansley. Broughton In Furness. .
A friend tells me it was 1 house, uninhabited on the 1851 census. District 3b Page 15.
Possibly a ruin now.
Can anyone find reference to it earlier than 1851 ?

Thank You.

Good News.  My Daniel, the father of William Wilson Birkett was a copper miner.
Daniel Birkett born 1794 Seathwaite, christened 4th Jan 1795 had 3 sisters & a brother.
Matilda 1787 married William Tyson in 1807.
Dinah born 1791 died in 1795
Sarah 1792 married John Steele.
John Birkettt christened 21 Feb 1789 is still a mystery.

They were the children of John & Jane.  John died in May 1794 before the birth of Daniel & Jane went on to marry John Tyson in 1798.
Has anyone seen any other information that would help me in my search ?

Thank You.
