1841 Census - Christopher Farwell
« on: Thursday 21 May 09 08:15 BST (UK) »
Hi List
I have tried to find the above Christopher Farwell and his family in the 1841 Census on An......,but haven't been able to come across them at all.  They seemed not to have left the Dorset area (Bridport seems to be the most common place).  Christopher was listed there in the 1851 Census.

Looking for the following Farwell's.
1.  Christopher Farwell bc 1790 (coal dealer/hatchler?/flax dresser?).
2.   Charlotte Farwell (nee Lathey) bc 1790
3.    Sarah Farwell b 1813 (perhaps a Twine Spinner?)
4.    Elizabeth Farwell  b 1815
5.   William  Farwell 1819
6.   John Farwell 1821
7.   Henry James Farwell  1828
8.   Ann Eliza  1830
9.   Mary Ann 1836
10.  Perhaps a TOBY FARWELL bc 1825 (he's listed in the 1851 Census)

Regards

Hi ricky
Brilliant work....thank you!.  :D
This is definately the family I'm looking for.....but, if you have some spare time, can have another look at this census, to make out what their occupations were???
I'm having a hard time trying to work out what they actually did?  The writing is very difficult to read.  I'm assuming that Christopher and Wm were hatchlers, but Sarah and Phebe's occupation is quite beyond me!.

Hi
I had a look to me it looks like Christopher & William were hicklers,
Phebe & Henry were spinners. I'm not sure about Sarah, maybe in the same industry as the others.

Hi Vicki

Thank you for that  :D- the fellows would have been Hatchler's (one who separated the coarse part of flax or hemp with a hackle) and that would mean that the girls were probably Spinners.

Regards

Helen
