Place name help needed please
« on: Wednesday 27 May 09 21:32 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have asked this question on the Ireland board, however I was hoping that there may be some people who check this board who have a knack of deciphering the hand writing of census transcribers!
My ancestor, Mary Burton, nee Bennett was born in Ireland in 1798.
In 1861 she states the place as what appears to be "Calerae"
The only places I can come up with are "Calary" just south of Dublin and "Callary" wich was a parish in Dublin. Given many people left Dublin for Nottingham around 1821 (roughly when she arrived) I can't help thinking it's Callary, but I have no idea if it would be spelt phonetically as "Calerae" if you heard someone with an Irish accent say it?
A Dublin work collegue of mine has said there is a place she pronounced as
"Call-ER-ee" which seems close. Still, I am open to suggestions and any help would be great!
Here is a link to the thread on the Irish board:
