Missing Grandparents 1891/1901
« on: Thursday 28 May 09 10:51 BST (UK) »
Would anyone be able to help me locate my Grandparents on the 1891/1901
census, England.

My grandmother b 1870, Jane Jackson, Burslem, Staffs, married Edward Green, Oct. 1887.Cobridge Christ Church, Staffordshire.I cannot find her on the 1901
census, but appears on the 1911 census with my grandfather, still Jane
Green, stated as housekeeper.

My grandfather b 1854, Roscommon, Ireland, Michael Joseph Rooney, was in the army for 18 years, discharged at his own request in 1889. I can't find him after that until he appears again with Jane in Birkdale, Southport, Lancs where
my mother Mary Jane Rooney was born, Norah and Robert Joseph her siblings
1905 and 1908, on the 1911 census, he was also married previously to Ellen
Martin, b 1860, Cork, Ireland.

Hope someone can help, I am new to this, not sure if I have made myself
clear.

Thanks Norma.

Yes I have got a little confused.

Can you tell us when and where Michael Rooney married Jane Green (nee Jackson).  What her father's name was from the marriage certificate and what age she gives.

Do you have any idea why Jane continued to call herself Green after the children were born with the surname Rooney? perhaps she didn't marry Michael after all.

Where did you get the birthplace and date from - 1870 Burslem?  If it was from a census, any census, please give the details.

We'll try to help all we can but we can only guess at details given in the 1911 census since we don't have subscriptions to check this for ourselves.  Where does she give as her place of birth when she's living in Birkdale?

Hi Norma,

Just to add to the questions that MaryA has already posed - do you have your mothers birth cert or a birth cert of one of her siblings?  If so, what name does Jane use on it?

Also, it might be helpful if you could give us all the info that was on the 1911 census household sheet - places of birth etc.

Best wishes,

Spidermonkey

I just thought - you can search the 1881 census for yourself at www.familysearch.org If you know anything more about Jane, or know the names of any of her siblings, you may be able to identify the family on there.

For Spidermonkey - living Ormskirk Registration District
Michael Rooney 57 born Ireland
Jane Green 44
Mary Jane Rooney 7 born Birkdale
Norah Rooney 6 "
Robert Joseph Rooney 2 "
RD457 SD5 ED17

Can't work out Jane's birthplace from this, not down as Burslem or Staffordshire anyway.

What I would be interested in is if Jane is noted as being married and for how many years?

Thank you for your replies,

I do have a birth certificate for my mother, it states Jane Jackson as her mother, I do not believe she and Michael my grandfather were married.

Jane is the daughter of William and Margaret (Grocott) from Burslem, Staffs,
I have the 1881 census information, but cannot trace my grandparents in
1891/1901 census.

When my grandfather left the army, his forwarding address was c/- P.O
Hounslow, Middlesex, he was with his first wife then, in 1891 she was in
Sheffield, Yorks with their children.

My family were all from Southport, so how Jane and Michael came together
there is the mystery. my mother was born in 1903. trying to find out when
and where they met, must be in the decade between 1890/1901.

I have traced Janes siblings, one brother and four sisters, still not had much
luck, they were all still in Staffordshire, one of her sisters was at my Grandfathers funeral in 1935, as I have a copy of the obituary

If I knew how, I would post the copy of the 1911 census transcript.

Thanks again
Norma.

Any clearer??

Hi Norma45,
A warm welcome to Rootschat.
I have had a look on the IGI records and I think the marriage in 1887s too late for their records.
You may want to try looking up the census as previously suggested,
I cannot help you in posting the census transcript maybe someone more technical savie can help.
One word of caution it is against copy right law/Rootschat policie to post the whole transcript, only a portion is allowed.
Kind regards,Billy.

Hi Norma,

The easiest way to post the information on the census page is to type it up - as Billy points out, it is a breach of copyright to put the image up here (small portions are allowed if you are trying to work out words etc), but it is not against copyright to transcribe the information yourself.
