How would I set about finding out any information regarding Russian emigrants dating from round about the Second World War?

Just to be clear about this, where did they emigrate to ?

If they emigrated to Britain, then there won't be many records.

If they emigrated to any other country, then the passenger lists for that country might help with more information.

The best thing to look at is if they became British citizens. You may find these records indexed on the NA catalogue or mentioned in the London Gazette:
http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/AdvancedSearch.aspx?geotype=London

Naturalisation records are those most likely to contain some details of where the person came from, but obviously if they didn't become citizens to the 1950s or later then you have issues with accessing them.

Location is usually the sticking point with researching immigrants. If you have any family records that give a hint to where they lived, or older relatives who might remember something about where the family came from, these can be worth many times their weight in gold.

Were the family Jewish? There are some additional things you might check in that case.
