Help deciphering maiden name
« on: Friday 29 May 09 19:56 BST (UK) »
Hi

My Great grandfathers name is Thomas Cynwell Phillips, he was born in 1871 his parents were Lewis and (Sarah) Ann - I have been trying to find their marriage, Thomas wasnt their first child, the first child was Elizabeth born in 1867.  The birth certificate of Thomas shows his mothers name as Ann Kenwil, well at least I think its Kenwil - but if this is the case I dont seem to be able to find any birth, marriage or census records for her - she was born in Breconshire in abt 1846.

Please can someone else take a look at it - and see what surname they come up with ?

Thanks
Powell - Ton Pentre
Phillips - Llwynypia
Howell - Llannon/Llwynypia/Cardiff/Pennsylvania,USA
Ungoeds - Llannon,Carmarthenshire/Australia

Looks like Kenwil to me - with a remarkable similarity to the Welsh Cynwell, don't you think?

Sorry for delay in replying but have been out for the evening ! but i am with you Thomases birth wasnt registered as Thomas Cynwell but just Thomas , but the special events documents that I hold shows him as Thomas Cynwell and as you say it could be a welsh adaptation of the surname - but how will I confirm this ??? I am not convinced they married - would this have been something that happened - I automatically thought it would have been frowned upon ?

Hello

Some variations for Ann(e) surname: Conwill found by Greensleeves and Counwill, Counwell, Councell, Counsell

On the 1861 name found as Counwill.
Parish Devynnock, Hamlet of Senny
David Counwill head 54 farmer
Margaret  daughter 18
Thomas son 13
Keziah Nicholas mother-in-law 84
household entry before them is for William and Margaret Phillips
Senny is a hamlet in the parish and hundred of Devynnock, county Brecon, 8 miles S.W. of Brecknock, on river Senny.

David Counwill married Ann Nicholas June 1838 quarter Brecknock.

There are several Counwill deaths in Brecknock; however, I only see one marriage with Counwill on free BMD site, and that is David's marriage to Margaret Nicholas in Brecknock. Thought they would have married in the home parish of the bride, which looks to possibly be Brecknock and I see no marriage with Phillips on same page.

I did discover a Robert Councell with a Letticia Phillips on the same page for marriages Crickhowell March 1845 quarter, so Councell is a possibility.

This looks like Anne, a housekeeper in her uncle's home, in same Hamlet as David Counwill on the 1861 Wales census.

Thomas Counwill head farmer of 48 acres Devynnock
Anne Counwill niece unmarried 18 house keeper Devynnock
Morgan Morgans nephew 8 Dowlais, Glamorganshire

Indexed as Counwell, but Counwill on census form.
