Scottish Placename Help.Completed Thanks.
« on: Friday 29 May 09 23:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Could anyone offer suggestions as to what this says. I know the first word is Invernesshire but i'm struggling with the second, to me the first few letters look like Beinn but i can't make out the rest. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. How do you include the image in the post after you have cropped it?

Gordon.

Hello Gordon,

You might not be getting any responses because the attached file cannot be viewed (at least I can't open it, and have tried with several software programs that recognize Tiff files.

Post it again directly into your post.  When you are posting, click the link below the message area that says "Attach a photgraph or image", then browse to the part of your hard disk that contains the image and double (?) click it.  If you do it right it should show up after you post.

Hi

It opens in Irfanview  :)

It looks like Bein(n) Strapper but I've not heard of it  :-\

Thanks for doing that Gadget.

What is the heading of the box where this appears?  Two things came to mind when I saw it "Ben something" (such as Ben Nevis, but not that), and "Invernesshire (born Shropshire)".

It looks like a census category,  Nick.

I don't think it's born Shropshire though.  I think a Gazeteer might be one way forward or perhaps Gordon could give us the details of the person - name/residence/age, etc.

You know how Scottish place names are spelt and can sound to a non local ear - Could it have been Strathpeffer? Might that come out sounding like Strapper?

Don't think so, Jen. I thought of that when I first saw it but Strathpeffer is R & C.

I'm considering Knapdale at the moment  ::)

I've been around most of those parts but it just doesn't ring any bells. If it's Bein/Bhein it must be in a mountainous part but then most of Invernesshire is - and then there are the islands  :-\

So what is the name of this person?  Can we check to see what is recorded on other census?  Start looking for a birth or baptism record to narrow down the parish?

Then we start scouring the maps ;)

I think we're waiting for Gordon to tell us, Nell - I did ask but he's not been on line.

I was hoping that you'd have found it in your little book when I saw your post  :-\
