It could be a small pre-crofting township which has disappeared in the Clearance history, Jen. As you probably know, many townships just disappeared then.  Also, it could be the Gaelic name for it  :-\

I'm off to the Crofting counties tomorrow and will try and ask a crofter friend of mine,  who knows the area well, if he can work it out.

I've also got a few books up there  on the Clearance history, so I'll see if anything is mentioned.

Peinstaphen  :D

It's across the Bay from Galtrigle just south of Halistra and north of Stein on the Vatternish peninsular of Skye.

Here's a bit about it:

http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/70708/details/skye+peinstaphen/

Interesting snip:

Quote
The farm of Peine Staptine is first documented in a rent roll of 1683 of the MacLeod estate (R C MacLeod 1928, Vol.I) and in 1788 when there were four married couples, fourteen children and five unmarried adults (SRO GD 9/3 Abstract Minutes of the British Fisheries Society 1786-1788), living on the farm. It appears to have been reorganised as a crofting township in the first half of the 19th century in conjunction with Hallin (see NG25NW 11).

And I've just remembered that the Glendale Martyrs were from Duirinish:

If you'r interested in the social history of the area,  Google Glendale Martyrs and there will be lots of links
