I've been scouring maps, mountains and all sorts but can't come up with anything sensible. I did wonder whether the first letter might actually be an F but need the rest of the image for handwriting comparison.

There is a Ben Starav on the shores of Loch Etive.

And I have found Strathfarrar and even a Glen Strathfarrar - I was hoping that perhaps there was a Ben Farrar but out of luck!

It does look like St- but it could easily be L- or F-

Either way, not much luck with the Be(i)ns so far.

It could be Fh<something> That's a valid gaelic letter  :-\

Think I'll give up and wait for Gordon.

Hi guys,

Thanks for replying, it's the birthplace of  John McLeod from the 1851 census and from the village of Galtrigile in Duirinish Isle of Skye. Also listed are Mary his wife born in Trian, Jessy A daughter born in Halistra, Flory McLean grandaughter born in Galtrigle and a John Mcleod servant born in Geary. I've found all those places on the map. So he could have been born on Skye or the Western Isles.

Gordon.

I'm looking at the census page now. It's not an S but it could be an L or an F . I'll try to put some snips up from various parts of the page.

It's a difficult one because it's the time of the Clearances and he is a Lotter and, from experience of further North, Lotters often came from a distance. Galtrigle is north of Uig (*the Dunvegan one), so North Uist and Harris are strong possibles as well   :-\

Here are some bits and pieces from the page, including the original name. There are examples of L, K F, S, H and K just in case  ::)

I think I've found the family in 1841.  I had to do a step through the Galtrigle township:

Galtrigle, Duirinish, Inverness-shire
Parish 110 ED 11 Page 11

John (a tenant)  and Mary are down as aged 50-54. Jessy is there aged 15. All the family are b. Inverness-shire.

I don't think it helps with the birthplace but at least they were in the same place!

Could the birth place simply be a farm name?

Of all the OS maps of Scotland, that area is one of the very few I don't have! ::)
