Hi

Can anybody read the maiden name of Jane McDonald please?

This is from the death certificate of Margaret Howat, nee McDonald, it's her mothers maiden name.

Thanks,

William

You could always double check it by looking for a marriage for Margaret's parents. Jane Twynham m ? Mc Donald.

I am looking for information on Margaret McDonald born in Dumfries abt 1830,  she married Samual Howat who was born in Durisdeer 14/03/1829 and he died around 17/11/1881 found in the River Nith according to his DC. SP does not have a marriage that I can for them that I can find but her death certificate from 07/02/1901 states her parents to be Thomas McDonald a Turnpike Surfaceman and mother Jane McDonald nee Twynham.

This is for my wifes family tree I am working on at present.

Thanks

Hi William,

This is strange... I can't view the page but it might be worth looking at

1851 Census - Newhouse Auchencairn, Kirkmahoe, Dumfries  - Parish/Kirkmahoe/ED: 4/Page:18/Line:3/Roll: 1134

Robert Kennedy 30, Head, Shepherd, Durrisdeer, Dumfries
Mary Kennedy 30, Wife, Tinwald, Dumfries
William Kennedy 2, Son, Kirkmahoe, Dumfries
Elizabeth Kennedy 3 Mo, Kirkmahoe, Dumfries
Margaret McDonald 35, Servant, Crawford, Lanark - House Servant
Samuel Howat 19, Servant, Durrisder, Dumfries - Shepherd
James Middleton 30, Servant, Durrisder, Dumfries - Shepherd

Could just be a coincidence that a Margaret McDonald and a Samuel Howat are servants in the same household. I realise Margaret is older but wondered if her age had been transcribed correctly.

Hi William,

This is interesting Samuel's wife Margaret is now called Mary, but her birth place is the same as the Margaret in the above 1851 Census. Maybe if you checked the children's birth's on SP you would get the parents marriage date. I believe it's usually on birth certificates.

1871 Census Dumfries Landward - Dumfries/ED: 4/Page: 14/Line: 13

Samuel Howatt 40, Head, Durisdeer, Dumfries - Shepherd
Mary Howatt 46, Wife, Crawford, Lanark
John Howatt 17, Son, Johnston, Dumfries - Shepherd
Mary J Howatt 13, Daug, Kirkmahoe, Dumfries
William K Howatt 9, Son, Dumfries, Dumfries
Agnes M Howatt 7, Daug,   Dumfries, Dumfries

IGI has the children...

John Howat -  09/01/1856 - Kirkmahoe, Dumfries, Scotland
Mary Jane Howat - 05/12/1857 - Kirkmahoe, Dumfries, Scotland
William Kennedy Howat -  06/11/1861 - Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland
Agnes McDonald Howat - 13/09/1863 - Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland

1861 Census - Dumfries St Michael/ED:24/Page:3/Line:6

Margaret's age varies again. . . if it's the same woman she is 30 in 1861 BUT 46 in 1871!

Margaret McDonald 30, Wife, Dumfries - Shepherd's wife
John Howat 6  Son, Kirkmahoe, Dumfries
Thomas Howat 4  Son, Kirkmahoe, Dumfries
Mary Jane Howat 2  Daug, Kirkmahoe, Dumfries

Samuel is not with the family

The 1851 census for Dumfriesshire is free online at the above link and you are right it is them although the ages do seem wrong?

The above link has her being 25, ancestry.co.uk has her being 35!

The death certificate says 74 so that would be around 1827, so 25 would be right.

I think!  :P
