Newton family of Hornchurch, Brentwood
« on: Sunday 31 May 09 14:28 BST (UK) »
Seeking information about the ancestry of George Newton (b abt 1781, probably Hornchurch, Brentwood, Essex) and his wife Mary Ann Newell (b abt 1788).

Known children of this couple:
* George Newton b abt 1812 (I have some census info on George and his family to 1881)
* Alfred Newton b abt 1818
* Charles Newton b abt 1822
* Walter (perhaps Walter James?) b abt 1824? (1851 census shown as a seaman, 25, but known to lie about his age, incl on his marriage record in Australia)

Walter (my line) apparently "ran away to sea" when quite young, possibly with his uncle (probably on the Newell side) who was a ship's captain. Reportedly they travelled to India among other places. Walter married Maria McClure in Australia in 1861.

I would like to find out as much as I can about his early life and his roots. Also about the Newells' connection to the sea. (I have records of American-born Newells as ships' captains travelling US - Far East - Australia in the mid 1800s but I haven't established any connection.)

Thanks for anything you can help with.

I havent got any info, sorry, except to advise that Hornchurch and Brentwood are completely different places!

Where did the info about his birthplace come from?

Is this the family in Woodford in 1841?

Charles 19  MS   Y    (Male servant)

Family Bible passed down shows Walter as coming from Brentwood, Essex.

1851 census record (where he's "at sea") shows his place of birth as Hornchurch, Essex.

Hence my reference to both in the subject. Probably I should have used a slash rather than a comma in my original posting.

oK that makes more sense!

1851
HO107 1769 427 20
Woodford
George 70 Annunitant bn Hornchurch
Mary Ann 63 bn Romford
Charles 28 son omnibus conductor bn Hornchurch
Mary Ann 27 sons wife bn Loughton
Charles 3 grandson bn Northumberland.

So Essex born Charles and his Essex born wife must have nipped all the way up to Northumberland at somwe stage!

Have you got a marriage for George and MAry?

No, I don't have anything at all other than what was in my first post. Anything extra would be wonderful. Even the 1841 census info is a bonus! Thanks so much,

So how did you find Mary's maiden name?

Is that in the Family Bible? If so any reference to date and place for marriage there?

The 1851 census for the 25 yr old Walter Newton, bn Hornchurch shows him as a Seaman, as you say. The address he (and many other seamen) are at is "Sailors Home, E.I Rd Poplar. Presumably East India Road.

I wonder if this is Walter and big brother George in 1841?

High Street Whitechapel
George 25  N
Ann 20    Y
Walter 15   N

was George a coffee house keeper in later censuses?

Thank you for all these snippets of info that all help to build up a picture and fit some puzzle pieces together.

As it's the wee small hours of the morning here in Oz I'll be "off the air" for the next 8 hours or so, but I look forward to some more gems in the morning.
