Wondering too if Robert would have divorced Ellen before he married Katherine or just claimed he was single and remarry illegally?
Is there a database of divorce records somewhere?

If they divorced, it should be recorded in the J77 series in the National Archive category. I don't see them in there under German or Germain, unless he'd come up with another pseudonym entirely!

See this:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=53

They would need good grounds for divorce - Ellen could have divorced him on the basis of desertion and adultery once he hooked up with Katherine. If he wanted a divorce, however, he'd need to accuse her of adultery (and there isn't any clear evidence that Ellen had another man around, at least up until the 1911 census). Probably neither of them had the money, anyway- or, indeed, the wish to drag their dirty laundry through the courts.

Hoping for more help.

I have been doing some more research into this address at 74a Marlborough Rd.

Apparently it was a 'news agent'.

In the 1881 & 1891 Robert is working as a printers paper cutter (stationers).

Could this be the same business as the news agent?
Were news agents and printers/stationers one and the same business.

Maybe Robert worked for Allford May as a paper cutter and Louisa worked for them as a servant.

How can I get more info about this business at 74a Marlborough Rd?

Chris.

I have searched the records and found that Robert Patrick German married Louisa Annie Griffiths in London, in 1910. (Vol 1b/ Page 745/ Q1).

I am interested in descendants of Clara German (nee Roche).

Hi Anthony,
Wondering are you descended from this Robert Patrick German, and if so are you happy to share info?

I know of a descendant of Robert Edward Albert German here in Australia.

Chris.

Hi Chris, I'm not a descendant of the German family.

Robert Patrick's mother Clara Roche was the daughter of my 3rd great grand uncle. In other words my 3rd great grandfather's niece or my 1st cousin 4x removed.

So there's no direct relationship, and my information is on the Roche side. If you are interested in the Roche family I can certainly help you out there.

Cheers
Ant
