More French help please
« on: Monday 01 June 09 17:24 BST (UK) »
The following is from 1402 and I can make out John Synore who I understand has been thrown in Marshalsea - I can make out commandant. Any idea on what the charge might be?

There is an endorsement asking for the reason for imprisonment to be declared in Chancery but the writing is very faint. Apologies for the right hand half of the page!

Are you sure it's Latin? It looks a lot more like French to me - I could swear I can make out, in the more legible left-hand side, 'deux' 'pays' and 'bien', though I can't see anything that is recognisably Latin. Why don't you rename the post French/Latin in case?
               Best of luck,

You're right - I've enlarged it to A3 and can see it starts:
Supplient humblement voz poures lieges & oratories? John Synore de Twyng (Tewin) ...

Apparently the format was:

Address (the heading, the person it is addressed to)
Incipit
Recital
Problem
Conclusion
Supplication
Request for Process
Remedy
Explicit
Memorandum of Surety

This is the very end as best as I can get it.

That leaves the middle section still to come. I know it will make reading the lines difficult but it's the only way I can get any sort of legibility.

Hi Bristol,
Your new scan of 7.23 this a.m. is a lot more readable; alas my acquaintance with old manuscript French is nil, so I can only wish you the best of luck and the prompt intervention of an expert.
                               Cheers,
                                              Pinot  :)
