Agnes McBeath and Corporal Joseph Hare
« on: Monday 01 June 09 19:53 BST (UK) »
Trying to find out what happened to Agnes McBeath and her husband Corporal Joseph Hare 'of Captain Burnside’s Company, 13th Regt.', whose marriage is registered at Stirling 3 Sept. 1820.  She is called 'of the parish of Stirling'.  I can find out nothing more about them.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Agnes's baptism was registered at Barony, Lanarkshire (622/4) where her father was apparently working as a jobbing gardener.  The family came from Logie parish, just north of Stirling, and they ended up there.  Her bap. entry reads:

McBeath - 8th December 1799, Charles McBeth, Gardener, Anderson. and Barbara Cameron, had their 4th child born 21st Nov, bap 8th Dec named Agnes.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks, Craig

Hi Craig, almost 3 months and no takers on this one!!!

Think I might have found them.

Two daughters born to  a Joseph Hare and  Agnes in 1824 and 1828

BARBRA HARE ch 5th Aug 1824, India Office Ecclesiastical Returns, Bengal Presidency, India.

AGNES HARE b 4th Apr 1828, ch 13th Apr 1828, Dinapore, West Bengal, India.

First daughter has the same name as Agnes' mother.

Now all you have to do is discover if Captain Burnside's Company, 13th Regt. was in India at this time.

Hi Val,

I'm so delighted to receive your reply. I have been looking for the whereabouts of this couple for ages and in desperation had put an entry onto Rootschat fully expecting no replies. So I'm thrilled to bits with your finds for me. It gives me something really positive to build on. The McBeaths/McBeths had a strong miltary family tradition and it had honestly crossed my mind they might have gone abroad with the army.

Can I be really cheeky and ask where you sourced the baptisms? I have been to the India Office Library many years ago to trace my great grandmothers family (Agnes McBeath Hare's nephews and neices), but haven't been there for a long time. Did you find them online?

Many, many thanks for this information.

Best wishes,

Craig

Thanks for that Val,

Why didn't I think of that source before. Sometimes the most obvious sources are the ones you ignore or don't think of!!

Very many thanks again.
